Kirk Franklin has, for a long time, been a major inspiration to me. His composing for the voice is uplifting and accessible and he himself is a formidible leader. Having the opportunity to open for his London show with Gospel Essence was an incredible opportunity. When Rebecca asked me to take part, I was delighted to support her work and it marked a suitable celebration of a great friend's project.
This project was aimed at developing processes for "singer-specific" composing. I was interested in bypassing genre definitions and traditional compositional perspectives to reveal the territory between words, music and the singer.
